Hi Peter,

Well, we had a good group today, including folks from Colorado and California. The birds were scattered and in the opposite locations from prior trips: small groups in the north (vale, etc) and nothing at all in the south below the lake.

We were still able to find 63 species including 2 Bald Eagles, lots of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Gray-cheeked Thrush, 13 species of warblers including Tennessee; Field Sparrow and at least 3 Purple Finches.

Best regards,
Tom

Oct 7th Tuesday Prospect Walk

From Tuesday morning, the BBC walk led by Bobbi Manian and Kathy Toomey

(Bobbi reporting)

Kathy and I filled in for Rob today.  Along with Emily and Gus we had an initially quiet morning.  Baseball fields had savannah and chipping sparrows and a few palms.  Lookout was fairly quiet, Kathy had at Black-throated Blue.  As has been the case for the Thursday and weekend walks, things picked up on the south end of park by lake and 3-sisters.  Gus spotted a red-breasted nuthatch.  We saw the Great Cormorant on a buoy between 3-sisters and peninsula.   Kathy found a late (for eBird) yellow warbler and willow flycatcher.   We did not cover lullwater or peninsula.

Best,
Bobbi

( Trip rescheduled to the 5th  due to poor weather)

Peter,

We went to Plumb Beach for the Wheatear but struck out. Did see Royal Tern and
Black Scoter as consolation. We then went to Floyd Bennett where we came on some
good sparrow activity including Lincoln's and White-crowned. After striking out
a second time on the Wheatear, we went to find the Say's Phoebe reported at
Edgemere Landfill and was this time rewarded for the effort.

So here is the list - 49 species! Please let Peter know if I missed anything.
Rusty kindly sent me his list which included only his sightings so I added
Carolina Wren (heard at PB), Black-throated Green Warbler (I think this was seen
by several at PB), Blue Jay (FB - with the E. Phoebes), Yellow Warbler (PB),
Crow sp (Seen in Rockaways and trip back), and Mourning Dove. If we want to add
Redtail which I saw on Flatbush on our way to PB, it puts us at 50. Sparrow sp
seen going into the marsh at PB makes it 51.

Hi Peter,

Well, today was a crazy day...we started out with one of the quietest couple of hours I've ever experienced in the park..I thought our final count might be somewhere between 5 and 7 species...

But then we hit a magic tree at the base of Lookout and things began to look up.
Rob J was touting his great tree in Greenwood with 10 species of warblers...well, our tree went to 11....

Most of the action was in the southern sections of the park, apart from a few "hot" areas.

We eventually had 64 species including 17 species of warblers. Highlights included Common Raven, American Kestrel (thanks to Nina Bai's sharp eyes), at least 3 Bay-breasted Warblers, a cooperative ADM Chestnut-sided Warbler, Nashville Warbler, both kinglets, 5 species of woodpecker and Toren's Garganey (the escapee...)

Best regards,
Tom

hi Peter

We had a friendly and enthusiastic group yesterday. We didn't come up with any real rarities but did see a nice variety of birds. Thanks to all and especially Dennis  for co-ordinating.

Here are my eBird lists from our trip (thanks to Mira for getting it started). Anybody who wants me to share an eBird list with (and I haven't already done so) should let me know.
