Hi Peter,

Good seeing you today!  It was another fairly quiet day, but we had a good group of enthusiastic and sharp-eyed birders.  Most of the warblers were by the Lake and Peninsula, it got quiet as soon as we headed up to Lookout.  We checked out the new 'berm' by the ballfields, and it definitely seems like it will be a good area in the fall.   Here's a photo of our intrepid regulars at the Berm.  Big thank you to Lenny for keeping the list - see below.

Best,
Bobbi

A splendid day on the bay!  Reacting to the promising radar reports from the night before, 5 birders started in the gardens at Jamaica Bay WR, where we quickly amassed 16 warbler species in a fast and furious 90 mins. The low trees and morning light gave us great looks.  Highlights among warblers were at BAY-BREASTED, several TENNESSEES, and three CAPE MAY WARBLERS in one small sapling.

The north end of the East Pond didn't produce the reported AMERICAN AVOCET, but we got up and close with a PECTORAL SANDPIPER and observed 11 STILT SANDPIPERS, and with one CASPIAN TERN. We then checked out the south end, and were delighted to catch up with the relocated AVOCET just north of the raunt.  Plenty of close inspection of peeps got us familiar with WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS and an uncommon for our area opportunity to view a juvenile Dunlin molting into its first winter plumage.

All the good times at Jamaica Bay got us to Plumb a little later than preferred, and birding at low tide was slow.  However, a mystery duck in the marsh gave us a good ID workout until we collectively concluded we were seeing a GREEN-WINGED TEAL.

In total, 18 warbler species and 13 shorebirds gave us the "double-double" that makes late summer birding so enjoyable. Ebirds checklists with photos:

Supreme thanks to Bob O'Neill for being our sole driver and saving the day, and Janet for organizing. Thanks all for a wonderful day.

Hi Peter,

Well, we had to work hard for the birds today, they were few and far between.  Luckily we had a patient and enthusiastic group! A few hotspots but overall very quiet.  One highlight (or lowlight?) was when we finally found a birdy spot on top of Lookout (birdy meaning goldfinches and red-eyed vireos ;-)) only to have all the birds flushed by a sharp-shinned hawk who must have been as desperate for birds as we were , because it made quite a ruckus as it chased and and flushed everything away.

Here's hoping the NW winds Wed night bring Tom some good birds on Thursday!

Well we aren't supposed to say there weren't a lot of birds so many must have been disguised as empty branches yesterday.

A group of 13 birders mined what birds were in the park after what seemed like a large movement out the previous evening on a warm humid morning.

Highlights were a bright philly V found on butterfly meadow by Isabel Conte, cape may, a pair of humming birds and a pair of rose breasted grosbeaks.

We had a chance to hone our fall warbler Id skills on the 11 species found along the way. We also were able to work on nothern water thrush chip notes as we found at least 4 possibly 5 vocal birds yesterday.

Best,

Hey all,

Perfect weather and lots of new arrivals made for a fun day. We had 14 warbler species on duck island alone. 19 total.

Lots of grosbeak heard along with a few scarlet tanagers. Lots of flycatchers.

A fun day with the whole group working together getting each other on 65 species of birds and honing our ears. Good start to the season.

Looking forward to next week,

Dennis

Hi Peter and Rob,

we had a great group this morning!  we looked for, but didn't find, the Connecticut, but we did see a lot of warblers (13 sp),  going around the lake via 3-sisters.   We had an interesting sparrow on top of LeFrak that i thought might be a clay-colored, but we couldn't relocated and i went back after the walk and was unable to find any sparrows.

Lenny kept the list for us today (thanks Lenny!).  Phil(s) or Sheila, if we missed anything please let me know.

best,
Bobbi
