Hi Peter,

Great group of birders on the walk today!! Weather held up till the end, so perfect timing.  And you were right, the Ospreys put on a show today; lots of them around.   One of them was particularly entertaining as it kept carrying around its fish.  We also were treated to the slightly gory sight of it eating the fish.

I didn't take any photos, but Charles got some great shots.  I can ask him to send pics to you if you'd like.  And everyone enjoyed seeing (and hearing) a male Ring-necked Pheasant.

A bit disappointed that the orange-crowned warbler I saw yesterday did not make an appearance today.  But guess you can't have it all 😜

I did take group shots, which I've attached.

And could you give me the e-mail addresses of the participants?  I told them I would share the list with them!

If you need anything else from me, please let me know.

Heydi

Hi Peter,

A fantastic Timberdoodler walk on a frigid late winter morning, with an enthusiastic, sharp-eyed group of new and regular birders.  We scored 6 Timberdoodles (3 together in one spot), a walk record!  our previous high was 4.    other highlights included red and white breasted nuthatch, several Carolina Chickadees happily foraging in a hollowed out tree trunk, crow chasing a RT Hawk, and a raven soaring over Valley Water.  At the start of the walk we had both Kestrel and RT Hawk harassing the parrot nest by the main entrance.  Perhaps looking to coopt a nesting location?  or looking for eggs?

attached some photos from trip participants (Charles and Bobbi)

best,
Bobbi (and Dennis)

Hi Peter,

We had a great turnout of 22 people for the "Waning Winter Days" field trip to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, March 5. It was cloudy but not cold, in the low 40s with very little wind and occasional sunshine. For a few folks, this was their first time at the refuge. It didn't disappoint.

Some of the highlights were the massive rafts of ruddies staging for migration on the West Pond, about 700 in all, plus approximately another 200 on the East Pond; a drake Eurasian Wigeon mixed in with American Wigeons; a drake and hen Northern Pintail; and many hundreds Snow Geese. We also detected an Orange-crowned Warbler by its call in some thick scrub bordering the West Pond, but it never emerged for proper looks. A lone Tree Swallow, getting a jump on migration, buzzed over the visitor center as we gathered at 8 a.m.

Here is our eBird checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S104236143

Participants: Angie Co, Tina Alleva, Indigo Goodson, Justin Fields, Kevin Rolwing, Russ Comeau, Terry & Erik Von Ploennies, Charles Tang, Valerie Masten, Xinyi Zhang, Danielle Khalife, Haowen Zheng, Marcela Mulholland, Vicki Seabrook, Cecilia Cho, Matt Fischer, Kathy Toomey, Allan Scholl, Anita Haravon, Michele Truong, Chris Laskowski.

Looking forward to spring now!

Best,
Ryan
