Peter,

A beautiful day for a walk. Everyone showed up and enjoyed themselves, I think. (Practically had the ferry to ourselves; only two other people aboard.) Hardly any birds, but we did have a very close encounter with two Red-tails swooping up and over the hill. List from ebird below. Just gulls and a few Mallards & Black Ducks in surrounding waters

Red Admiral and Colias sulphur butterflies; big Differential Grasshopper crossing the road (good Kestrel food; saw what must be the resident male Am Kestrel eating one on Thursday when I scouted the island out).

Cheers,

Matthew

Toms Thursday BBC Walk

Leader Tom Stephenson

Hi Peter, and everyone.
A beautiful Fall day with lots of great flowers and a nice breeze. It was only moderately birdy, but we had some very good finds.
Eleanor, trying to raise the bar after her phalarope find, first spotted a Connecticut Warbler, south of the Sparrow Bowl; and she also heard a pipit fly-over which we eventually re-heard and found in the muddy area across from the ball fields. Some of our other newer birders were also great spotters.

We ended up with 59 species including 11 species of warblers. Other highlights included 3 Nashville Warblers, many Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 3 Brown Creepers, and a small kettle of raptors including an Osprey, 1 or 2 Red-shouldered Hawks, and some Red-tails.

Here's the list. Sad that migration is finally winding down. We're going to have to do some duck walks soon!

Best regards,
Tom

Hi Peter,
Our Tuesday "Friends' Walk" went very well! We saw a respectable number of warblers, several raptors and splendid sparrows. The walk was action- packed starting with many ducks fleeing the lake at the moment a Cooper's Hawk arrived- to a Raven flying upside down a few times to delight us!
A very cordial group as well.

Hi Peter,

Here is the checklist from today's walk: https://ebird.org/checklist/S95722921

We had another excellent day, with 70 species overall -- and we only glanced at the north side of the lake before breaking up close to 1 PM. The highlight was by far one of the best raptor flights I've seen within the park: 7 species in total, including 6 peregrines, four of them together over the Long Meadow. This flight line seemed to run over Lookout too, since around noon we had a 10-minute rush with red-tails, ospreys, sharpies, cooper's, kestrel and peregrine. After coming down Lookout, two ravens were riding the thermals above the hill too.

The Dickcissel was still hanging around ballfields 2 and 3, and we also found a Yellow-billed Cuckoo in the Sparrow Bowl. The western edge of the Long Meadow from north of the Picnic House to the ballfields was excellent.

Hi Peter,

I know you're on vacation but here's the checklist from the Tuesday walk today:

Despite gray skies and NNE winds overnight, the small group that turned out were treated to an outstanding day, continuing the diversity of last week if not the numbers. We ended up with 65 species and a number of notable sightings.

Terry spotted a Sharp-shinned Hawk whizzing above Lookout early in the morning, and she later picked out a Dickcissel among a big flock of House Sparrows north of the ballfields. Lookout had a great variety of warblers, particularly on the summit, among them Tennessee, Nashville, and Blackburnian. And as we wrapped up the walk around noon, a juvenile Broad-winged Hawk flew low over our heads and circled briefly over the lake.

It's been a great fall!

Hi Peter,
It was a beautiful day, once again, in the park. And there were lots of birds everywhere. In addition, we were shadowed by the movie crew doing the Steve Buscemi-produced documentary on the park. They seemed excited about the footage, so hopefully we'll help bring more attention to how important the park is for migrating birds.

As for the list, we had 72 species, which is pretty good for Fall. We had 17 species of warblers, 7 sparrow species, and lots more. Highlights were the Dickcissel (by the ball fields), many Magnolia Warblers, a cooperative Tennessee, a well-behaved Nashville for those hardy enough to last to the end; 3 Common Ravens, 2 Yellow-billed Cuckoos, 2 Brown Creepers, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Gray-cheeked Thrush, lots of Golden-crowned Kinglets, and more.

Here's the list. Thanks again to Ryan and Angie for co-leading.
Ryan, let us all know if I've missed anything.

Tom

Hey Peter,

We had a small but experienced group today and there was good activity around the south and east side of Lookout. Rain cut the walk short a little after 11, but we still managed over 50 species after a night of SW winds.

The highlights for me were a quick Peregrine flyby after we entered the park, a Sharp-shinned Hawk flyover, a White-eyed Vireo at the Butterfly Meadow, and Cape May and Wilson's Warblers in the Wellhouse area. Thanks to Ed for picking out a Brown Thrasher at the Butterfly Meadow (a few got on it, though I only heard it) and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo too.

A few folks missed our group in the morning since they were waiting by the playground, whereas I recalled the meeting point being at the entrance to the park. But we linked up at the Peninsula Meadow before the rain and they had found lots of birds on a dogwood in the Vale. So everyone seemed happy.

Best,
Ryan

Hi Peter,
OK. Bobbi threw down the gauntlet for the deadest day of Fall migration; and we're picking it up to compete!
In fact, we did have a great group, and no rain, and a nice, blustery day (with gale-force winds in the trees, sometimes....)  but not a lot of birds in the park.

That being said, we did have a couple of good ones including Winter Wren, Common Raven, several hummingbirds at the midwood touch-me-not spot, and 9 species of warblers.

Sadly, on the way out we found one tree with at least 9 lanternflies. We were able to kill several but some were high up on the tree.
Sara (new birder with super spotting skills) is sending me a GPS location for the tree and I'll forward it to Christian at PPA.

Here's the list.

Best regards,
Tom

Thanks very much to Ryan for co-leading, as we had close to 40 people. (And let us know if I missed anything you had with your group.)

Hi Peter,

well, it was a slow one today!  not many birds around and we worked for the ones we got.  That being said, we kept going for 7 hours... We started with 22 birders and 5 of us went for the duration.  Terry showed us a nice hummingbird/jewelweed hotspot in the midwood right off of Center behind the green containers.  at least 3 hummingbirds there.  We also had a tail-less Black-throated Green seen on the way in, and later later on the way out, pic attached.   Tom, can he migrate w/o tail, or does he have to stay in Brooklyn until it grows in?

Ryan, you're up for the final 2 weeks.  Wishing you better birds next week!

b.
