Lighthearted funny moment on the NY Public Library terraced plaza: While Peter, Bobbie, and Dennis sat around one of the tables (near where the Yellow-breasted Chat initially was spotted), waiting for the Chat to reappear, a middle aged photographer with his two students approached us trio of birders and asked , " "are you birders?"... Dennis says: "no we're just here for a chat". :>

Hi, Peter. We had a very nice day for our Sunday stroll. We tallied 38 species overall between 8 am and noon. The highlights were three Eastern Bluebirds on the ballfield backstop and a Lincoln's Sparrow near the Boathouse.

October 31st Rockaway Inlet Parks: Fort Tilden, Riis Beach, Floyd Bennett

(trip was re-scheduled from October 30th due to Snow northeaster storm)

Leader Peter Dorosh
7 members attending

We enjoyed a fantastic day from my re-scheduled Brooklyn Bird Club walk from stormy Saturday with quality birds and a terrific sparrow list under strong windy northwest winds. Of the locales visited, Fort Tilden shone the most with quality sightings and numbers whereas Riis Beach golf course produced the best bird on our walk.On a day dominated by over flying blackbird flocks, mostly Red-winged Blackbirds, 67 species including 11 species sparrows and WESTERN KINGBIRD added a little drama.

Of the best sparrows, 2 LINCOLN's and VESPERS were most beneficial to my group. The two Lincoln's worked the chain link fence next to the Riis Golf course south entrance , by the Riis men's restroom. VESPERS , 3 total in the Tilden Community Garden on a courteous tip from Andrew Baksh, enabled us to see two of them , one cooperatively on the picket fence in close proximity. Also FIELD, & WHITE-CROWNED added to the day list.

A large flock of AMERICAN PIPIT , est at 60 was seen well on the Tilden Rugby / soccer field after an initial 12 on the little league field earlier. One Horned Lark was among them.

Best duck observance was the 300 + strong BLACK SCOTER flock with several SURF and fewer WHITE-WINGED, a good observation for my group seeing all three species at one time. The flock was near a jetty 700 feet east of the Fisherman's west lot.

A nice surprise, especially from where it took off, a WILSON's SNIPE on the busy car road from the turn after the little league fields, towards the beach. The snipe's takeoff certainly "spooked" us .

At lunchtime, a soaring RED-SHOULDERED HAWK delighted us, affording great views on this clear sunny day.

But best for us as we walked a circuit of the golf course counterclockwise, was the WESTERN KINGBIRD. As we rounded the last leg , along the north fence of the Riis golf course, facing the inlet, I noted a flying bird coming from the inlet side and landed & perched on a cherry right above us. All of us saw the bird quite well and low before it, after half a minute, flew into the Riis golf course..

I also heard second hand reports of NORTHERN GOSHAWK ( Steve Walter, later Rob Bate), & BALD EAGLE ( Walter). the former hanging around and working the abundant food sources throughout Tilden's habitats.

Results of today's LAST Thursday Fall Series walk, led by Tom Stephenson.

The Brooklyn Bird Club thanks Tom for his generous time and efforts

leading the Autumn Thursday walks.

Here's is Tom's note:

Hi Peter,

Well, as was the case of a few of our Fall walks this year, a day that started looking dreary and birdless eventually yield some great species.

Today we had 13 species of warblers including Yellow-breasted Chat (not really a warbler anymore...but...), Tennessee, Nashville, 2 Wilson's warblers, a Philadelphia Vireo, an Indigo Bunting,

Towhee, Pied-billed Grebe, and some sparrows...50 species in total.

Here's the list.

Results of Thursday Fall BBC walk

Hi Peter,

Well, we were a bit in the fog today, but thanks to Rob Bate's strategy of going to the southern end of the park, we eventually had a pretty good morning with 50 species including 14 warblers.

Highlights were several Spotted Sandpipers, several Green Heron, several Black-crowned Night-herons....Wilson's, Blackpoll, Pine, Tennessee, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Scarlet Tanager, Osprey and Lenore had a Peregrine...

So all in all a good outing.

Best regards,
Tom

Saturday, September 10th Prospect Park

Trip Leader: Tom Stephenson

Good group of about 13 people today.

We had a few good birds including several flycatchers sp, 16 species of warblers and some other stuff.

Best warblers were probably Tennessee pre Vale, fem Hooded on way out from Rick's place towards Nelly's lawn, and early Yellow-rump.

All buried by tons of American Redstarts.

Acadian, Least, Traill's sp, Pewee, Gr Crested, good for flycatchers...

Tom

Doodletown, Harriman State Park June 4th

Leading : Tom Preston

The Brooklyn Bird Club trip to Doodletown, Iona Island, and Sterling Forest enjoyed comfortable weather, some nice birds and other wildlife and was, I think, enjoyed by all.

Highlights included many Cerulean and Hooded Warblers at Doodletown. Also there were Yellow-throated Vireos, Pileated Woodpecker, Worm-eating Warbler, and Louisiana Waterthrush was heard.

Jerry Layton and Paul Otto found some other interesting wildlife including various dragonflies such as Chalk-fronted Corporal, butterflies such as the spectacular Red-spotted Purple, and Red-spotted Newts in the reservoir. Jerry was not reluctant to lie full length in the vegetation to get photos of many of these, risking poison ivy, ticks and who knows what else.

Iona Island was rather quiet. A Black Vulture appeared with some Turkey Vultures, and a Killdeer hung out next to the rail tracks.

Earlier, some of us saw Raven and Black Vulture by the Bear Mountain Lodge.

At Sterling Forest, we searched unsuccessfully for an Acadian Flycatcher seen a few days ago near the Visitor Centre. We did locate a rather elusive Golden-Winged Warbler at Ironwood Road, singing occasionally, and briefly seen by a few of us. We had great views of a Prairie Warbler and heard a Black-billed Cuckoo, and Raven at Ironwood Road. Other birds at Sterling included 2 Green Herons, Wood Ducks and an Eastern Bluebird.

Participants: Paul Otto, Jerry Layton, Dennis Hrehowsik, Donna Evans, Vinny Falci, Annie, Dan Horgan, Bob O'Neill, Lynne Hertzog, Tom Preston (leader).
