Hi Peter,

Well, we had a good-sized group today. Unfortunately the birds forgot to show up...well, actually we did have some good sightings. But all in all it was a bit slower than last week.

We did have 8 species of warblers including Blue-winged and Chestnut-sided along with Red-breasted Nuthatch and a Veery.

Other than the Blue-winged and Chestnut-sided, the bird of the day  might have been a Zabulon Skipper (photo attached)

Tuesday BBC Walk August 23rd

Hi Peter,

we started w/ about 12 birders this morning by the lake.  it was immediately active with redstarts and yellows by the lake and the dirt pile.  While we were looking at warblers and Indigo Bunting female by the dirt pile some of us saw a long-tailed cuckoo-like bird fly in over a magnolia tree and dip down.  Knowing it's hard to chase a cuckoo we made a mental note but did not pursue. Later, as we were heading up towards Lookout, Joe spotted the cuckoo perched in a tree above the picnic tables, by the lamppost.  the bird was very cooperative and quickly identified as black-billed.  It posed for a while and everyone got long satisfying looks.  It's hard to tear yourself a way from a black-billed cuckoo, but we did, heading up to Lookout where we saw what might have been the previously reported possible yellow-bellied flycatcher, but i did not get good looks and i'm not sure if anyone else got a definitive look good enough to ID.  So i listed it as empid (sp) for the day list.  

Also of note was a Solitary Sandpiper spotted by Janet working the edge of the 'lake' created by the duckweed(?) that is all over the lullwater by Pink Beach.   Overall, we had 13 warbler sp and 58 species total.

Janet should be providing good pics of the cuckoo and solitary under separate cover

Hi Peter,

We had a very small group today, but the birds were great!

At first I thought our bird-of-the-day was going to be a caterpillar...but then birds started showing themselves or calling and it went on and on all day.

The highlights were 10 species of warblers including both Waterthrush, Cape May, Blue-winged, N Parula, Chestnut-sided, Magnolia. We also had calling Alder and singing Willow and perching Yellow-bellied! There were 3 great-blue Herons and a Great Egret attending what we heard was a fish die-off; and we also had a singing White-eyed Vireo.

All in all a surprisingly birdy day.

Ten Brooklyn birders enjoyed a beautiful day of shore-birding at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Thanks to Tom Stephenson for leading a great trip for the BBC!  Highlights included great close-up looks at Stilt Sandpipers, Pectoral and a Red Knot, and plenty of the usual suspects. Yes, a fun day. Not lots of unusual birds but 14 species of shorebirds and lots of other stuff.

June 4th, Breeding Birds of Fresh Kills Park, Staten Island

Hi Peter,

 

Our Staten Island trip, led by Seth Wollney, was a great success!  The group went to Freshkills Park/Landfill, Mt. Loretto Unique Area, Great Kills Park (Mudflats), and Oakwood beach.  All of the locations were amazing, but Freshkills was a special treat, as it is closed to the public.  We had the entire 2200 acres almost entirely to ourselves and while there, we were able to find Grasshopper Sparrows on one of the mounds.  We also visited with a small group of bird banders who were working in the park.
