Hi Peter,
For the wild card trip, I and seven participants decided to look for the rare waterfowl which have been reported on Long Island. We tallied 49 species of which 16 species were waterfowl. Highlights included Pink-footed Goose at Hendrickson Park in Valley Stream, Northern Pintail, Green-winged Teal, Ring-necked Duck, Common Merganser, Black-crowned Night-Heron, and Kingfisher at Belmont Lake State Park in West Babylon, and a Peregrine Falcon at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale. Thanks to Kathy Toomey for keeping the list.

December 3rd, Breezy Point, Rockaway Queens

10 hardy souls enjoyed/endured a walk around Breezy Point, which lived up to its name on Saturday. Steady, stiff winds sandblasted the group, but didn't keep the good birds away.
Upon first sight of the water on the walk out to the beach, we were treated to a sky full of NORTHERN GANNETS gliding westwardly. Scanning east to Far Rockaway, every binocular view was filled with them. Adelia spotted the bird of the day, a young male SNOWY OWL, enjoying its breakfast of LONG-TAILED DUCK tartare. A life bird for some and a delight for all.
At the jetty, we carefully picked out three shorebird species. Couldn't find any purple sandpipers because the waves were splashing the jetty, but patiently waited for a RUDDY TURNSTONE to peek out from the rocks. On the walk back to the lot, a flock of living LONG-TAILED DUCKS and a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK were the highlights.
After lunch, we tried the Ft. Tilden Battery area to get out of the wind. Land birding was tepid, but at the Silver Gull club on the water we enjoyed close-up views of sitting BLACK SCOTERS and a LONG-TAILED DUCK. Eddie spotted a lone SNOW BUNTING flying fast towards the dunes to the east.

November 5th, An Autumn Rarity Quest

Eight birders enjoyed a beautiful fall day for a rarities chase. Owl's Head was less productive than it had been during the week, possibly due to THREE prowling Merlins, weekend dogs, and drone activity, but still active with nuthatches, chickadees, titmice, a BLUE-HEADED VIREO, and a BLACK-THROATED GREEN (seen only by Kristin). DO was overall quiet, but that seemed to suit the YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO that flushed up from the beach area and posed nicely for us up in a tree. Big props go to Kathy Toomey and Chris Laz who refused to give up on a skulky sparrow at 6-Diamonds and were rewarded by great looks at a VESPER SPARROW seen well by all. Plum Beach still had some Ammodramus sparrows around, but they were not very cooperative. Probable sightings by some of Nelson's and Seaside will have to remain a mystery.
Overall we had 65 species. Big thanks to Chris Laz for keeping the lists, Marc Brawer for driving and to everyone for a fun day.

we had 23+ birders show up for today's walk in Greenwood. Lots of new faces, lots of good spotters. We birded around the 4 waterways. 4 warbler species and 7 sparrow species *AND* we won the Brooklyn Triple Crown - Ruby, Golden and Orange.

Hi Peter,
Well, it was sad to be doing our last Thursday walk for the season. Violating all of my instincts and rules I allowed everyone, myself included, 30 seconds to be verklempt ...before getting back to the important job of birding....
It was very slow in the park....somebody had "hoovered out" all of birds the night before....but we did manage to dig up some good species including
White-crowned Sparrow (thanks to Gus), Purple Finch, Nashville Warbler, American Widgeon, a Merlin, a fleeting Peregrine (thanks to Kathy), a fairly cooperative Winter Wren, a very cooperative Black-throated green Warbler.
Here's the list. I'll send a couple of shots later.
Guess we all have to hole up inside and wait for Spring now
