Prospect May 10th Tuesday series

Results of Rob Bate's Tuesday BBC walk which witnessed the continuing Termite hatch out on a lesser scale above the Wellhouse near the Maryland Monument.

10 or so of us showed up for the Tuesday walk from Bartell-Pritchard. Highlight of the day was a minor recurrence of the hatch out on Sunday. We had excellent looks at Chestnut-sided Warblers, Redstarts, Parulas, Magnolias, Common Yellowthroats and of course Yellow-rumps. 15 species of warblers.

Hi Peter,

Great walk today with Paul leading and about 20+ people. I mentioned to Paul I'd send a list and it includes a few things a "tail" of the group saw after the main group dispersed.

Very birdy, as you know, with lots of great warblers. We had 20 species including at least 4 Cape May, 3 Blackburnian, at least 2 Tennessee and a brilliant Canada. We also had Least Flycatcher (FOY?) (it vocalized after you left confirming our ID) and many other birds. Here's the list:

It turned out my meeting was delayed until the afternoon so I was able to attend part of the walk today. Ed co-led and then took over after I left and he may have sent you a list.

We had about 20 people for the walk, and it was definitely birdy in most of the park.

Here's what we saw when I was there plus a WOEWA and WHCRSP Ed had on his way to meeting place. Highlights, maybe Cape May Warbler at MD Mon, Indigo Bunting on path just L from monument. 17 species of warblers including early Blackpoll.

Hi Peter,

We had a good group today of over 30 avid birders, most birding until after noon, some until 2:30 or so.

It was a bit "lumpy" with slow spots and hot spots. Overall we had 82 species including 19 species of warblers and 4 species of vireo.

We missed the Bobolink and nightjar, but did get Marsh Wren, Least Sandpiper and 5 Common Loon flying over just before 7am.

Let me know if you'd like any more information on any of these.

April 28th Prospect Thursdays walk

A group of 20 brave souls defied the ominous weather report and spent about 2 1/2 hours birding the park before the thunder and rain started.

And actually, after the first storm wave passed, a few truly hardy folk (Mike, Bob, Eddie and Anita) continued on for a bit, adding some more species.

All in all fairly slow, (only 9 species of warblers) but with a few good birds including the lingering Prothonotary at the mulch location.

Rain--soft falling , hard rain, cold rain, chilling rain--you name it made it a challenging Brooklyn Bird Club walk that didn't reveal anything special but wet birds for sure.


With migration at a stall from the inclement weather, there's always a hope for a good bird driven down by bad weather. That wasn't the case today for 5 intrepid birders hoping for that good bird. But nevertheless, it was fun getting out there and anticipating good birds in this short migration season.

It was a tough day for birding. With winds gusting to 25mph the few birds we did see were flying sideways. In addition to the wind speed, the direction was also not very conducive to observing migrating raptors (not to mention the overcast sky). We did see two migrating Common Loons, one of which eventually turned around and headed back south. Anyway, despite low temperatures and high winds, people had a good time and we ended up seeing 36 species. One other highlight was watching a Common Yellowthroat foraging for insects along the inside vertical edge of the coping wall around Crescent Water.
