A group of 20 brave souls defied the ominous weather report and spent about 2 1/2 hours birding the park before the thunder and rain started.

And actually, after the first storm wave passed, a few truly hardy folk (Mike, Bob, Eddie and Anita) continued on for a bit, adding some more species.

All in all fairly slow, (only 9 species of warblers) but with a few good birds including the lingering Prothonotary at the mulch location.

April 23rd Prospect Park

Rain--soft falling , hard rain, cold rain, chilling rain--you name it made it a challenging Brooklyn Bird Club walk that didn't reveal anything special but wet birds for sure.


With migration at a stall from the inclement weather, there's always a hope for a good bird driven down by bad weather. That wasn't the case today for 5 intrepid birders hoping for that good bird. But nevertheless, it was fun getting out there and anticipating good birds in this short migration season.

It was a tough day for birding. With winds gusting to 25mph the few birds we did see were flying sideways. In addition to the wind speed, the direction was also not very conducive to observing migrating raptors (not to mention the overcast sky). We did see two migrating Common Loons, one of which eventually turned around and headed back south. Anyway, despite low temperatures and high winds, people had a good time and we ended up seeing 36 species. One other highlight was watching a Common Yellowthroat foraging for insects along the inside vertical edge of the coping wall around Crescent Water.

Great walk this morning with the Brooklyn Bird Club, we had about 15 people (I forgot to do an accurate head count.)

Highlight were the Yellow-throated Warbler, 7 species of warblers and Tom Stephenson spotted and identified a Red-throated Loon flying north over the top of the park as we crossed the Rose Garden area above the Vale of Cashmere.

March 13th Floyd Bennett "Green" March hike

During my theme trip Brooklyn Bird Club walk starting from Marine Park's Salt Marsh Nature Center , walking most of the way down Flatbush Ave to Four Sparrow Marsh Preserve and last Floyd Bennett Field, we encountered our first sign of spring with EASTERN PHOEBE in Four Sparrow Marsh , in this weed lot that is slated for future development if not opposed. Whimsically, the Phoebe first alighted on a discarded push cart , then unto a nearby shopping cart handle in the trash strewn field. Prior that,a TURKEY VULTURE passed over very low with good visibility of the red head very near us without need for binoculars.

Though our count was quite low on this gusty day which impacted bird activity , nevertheless, the report of 10 species duck and an exceptional sighting for our last bird species before calling it a day , a soaring COMMON RAVEN in a standstill position over Floyd Bennett's cricket field adjacent to Aviator Sports, at precisely 3:15 pm. The large corvid soared low enough , undeterred by the strong winds, over the cricket field which earlier had 33 HORNED LARKS and 2 KILLDEER..For fickle , unpredictable March, a really terrific wind burned day for us.

Winter Pines of our Local Area February 27th

A gorgeous day for a walk focusing on those trees that keep their green throughout winter. For the walk, a tour of Prospect and Greenwood's pine trees and other conifers and surrounding perimeters yields 40 species for a 5+ mile walk. And in between ,a stop at the Oak Leaf Tavern on Fort Hamilton Parkway made it a nice fulfilling respite before Greenwood Cemetery.
