Hi Peter,

12 optimistic souls spent 4 hours scouring the park for 39 species of birds.  Slow day but here are some highlights (good and bad):

1) crazy hatch out of some kind on top of Lookout had more than 50 Chimney Swifts swooping around at eye level.  Great views, we watched for over 10 minutes.

2) Two male Orchard Orioles by Music Pagoda also gave us some nice looks 

3) only THREE warbler species (yellow, B&W, yellow-rump) :-(

p.s.  Ann and I continued for another 2 hours (Penna, Midwood and Vale) netting Great-Blue Heron, Goldfinch, Hairy WP and Wood Thrush.  I also had a Mockingbird on my way out.  Whoo hoo!

We had 15 to 20 in our group today. From 7 am to noon we tallied 50 species. Our highlight bird was of course the Prothonotary spotted by a member of our group.

What a great day!  We were quoting you as we left the park today: "quality birds".  Didn't get any shots of the Prothonotary during Ed's walk, but on the way out, Kristin tracked down this highly vocal Prairie singing on the side of Lookout, giving us great views in a beautiful setting.

Some of Starr’s longtime bird walk members showed up on a sunny morning in and around the Ramble for a walk sponsored by Peter Dorosh and the Brooklyn Bird Club. Starr was honored with a memorial plaque from the BBC. Starr’s co-leader Lenore Swenson also joined the group and helped us find some good birds.

Overall species and individual bird counts were extremely low for this time of year, as has been the case for the last week. Weather patterns appear to be discouraging migration through our area.

Highlights of the walk were:

• Great Egret (flyover)
• Osprey (flyover, Strawberry Fields)
• Chimney Swift
• Blue-headed Vireo
• Red-eyed Vireo
• Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
• Ovenbird
• Northern Waterthrush (the Oven)
• Black-and-white Warbler (at least 5)
• HOODED WARBLER (male, Strawberry Fields)
• Northern Parula (at least 5, mostly heard)
• Yellow Warbler (Maintenance Meadow)
• Rose-breasted Grosbeak (heard in Tupelo Meadow)

We also saw a text alert that Alex Hale, who was a close friend of Starr and had birded with her often, found — fittingly — a Cerulean Warbler along the Loch in the North End.

Hi Peter,

Fantastic group today with lots of great birds and wonderful weather.

The highlight will vie for the "bird of the year"...Lawrence's Warbler...perfect plumage affording great long looks.

All in all we had 13 species of warblers, and 72 species overall including Nashville, Black-throated Green, N. Parula, Ovenbird, Prairie, Rusty Blackbird, at least 3 Winter Wren, 5 species of woodpecker, Fish Crow (every week so far!), many Blue-headed Vireo and also White-eyed and Warbler, and Field Sparrow.

The woods were a bit quieter today, with only 64 species; but a great group with several new attendees.

Highlights were Fish Crow, Ovenbird, White-winged Crossbills (still here!..maybe getting brighter?), 17 Pine Siskin, many Pine, some Palm warblers, several Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, 3 Winter Wren, at least 2 Green Herons, Blue-winged Teal, Osprey, Kestrel, and 4 species of swallows including Bank and Rough-winged.

April 11th Thursday Spring Walk Prospect

Hi Peter,

 

I wanted to report in on the walk today.

 

It was a small but hardy and energetic group and the park was incredibly birdy. I have never seen so many Pine and Palm Warblers or Brown Creepers in one day...(maybe higher than all other days combined for the creepers!) There were also many kinglets and Hermit Thrush.

 

The large numbers of some of these species gave us great opportunities to study their calls and songs. All told we have 67 species including a couple seen by Rob on the way in to the park.

 

Highlights included 40+ Pine Warblers, 40+ Palm Warblers, 20-30 Brown Creepers, Wilson's Snipe (thanks to text tip from Keir), Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, brilliant Blue-headed Vireo, Blue-winged Teal, 6+ White-winged Crossbills, Chipping and American Tree Sparrows (6 sparrow species), a brilliant Louisiana Waterthrush, 3 species of swallow, 5 species of woodpecker, 4 species of warblers, and more. Migration has begun...
