Very slow day for warbler week. 5 of us for todays walk from Bartel-Pritchard. We tried unsuccessfully for the Kentucky Warbler but did have one beautiful Blackburnian Warbler up on Lookout with multiple Scarlet Tanagers. In the Ravine a Black-crowned Nightheron was sitting beneath the Ambergill Falls above the bridge.

Another great day. We had about 25 people who braved what looked like rain, but then turned great.
The Park is still very busy, and we had activity in just about every part we had time to visit.
Some highlights:
83 species, 20 warblers including Mourning (brief, unfortunately), at least 5 Blackburnian, 3 Canada, 2 Wilson's, Bay-breasted in great views, and more.
Flycatchers are beginning to show up. We had a Traill's sp, Least and another, probably Acadian. Also, thanks to Ann we had Phila Vireo and thanks to Bobby and Stanley a Ruby-throated Hummingbird nest in the rose garden area!

Good walk today with 7 of us in total seeing 55 species of birds, (56 really but I didn't see the Prairre Warbler.)
We got the previously reported Summer Tanager and a second one as well in the Vale of Cashmere. They were in a large Tulip Tree with several Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and several Baltimore Orioles. It was busy in spots, very good on Lookout Hill's west slope.
13 warbler species, 3 vireos.

Prospect Park May 5th

Low cloud ceiling,heavy overcast skies, and misty conditions deflated bird numbers today, no doubt everything or most birds skedaddled last night. My Brooklyn Bird Club walk was an experience of much effort, with whatever birds that sang refusing to cooperate or heavy leaf foliage a nuisance. Despite the hard earned sightings, we counted 13 species warblers--among an impressive 55 total species, at the expected speed we went ;) -- most warblers seen but a few identified by song alone.
For us the best birds was not a warbler but a vireo and unexpected flyby terns. Atop the Maryland Monument stairs, while i stopped to explain some bird matter with a member, one of the other members spotted YELLOW-THROATED VIREO first in a oak , then most of the observation in the adjacent large cherry . It salvaged the list for lack of quality. After the stairs sighting, along the Peninsula meadow, Mary E spotted two terns flying along the lake edge, which I identified as COMMON TERNS for the black i spotted in their underside wings. Salvage bird #2.
Warblers were few, but a very good look and satisfying for all was PRAIRIE WARBLER along the south edge of Butterfly Meadow. It was a handsome bird with its bold flank streaking and bowl shape mark on the cheek.
Regarding SOLITARY SP (SOSA) we spotted last for the day, a whimsical scene to relate. First ,a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON (BCNH) was seen on the fallen oak limb in the water under heavy natural cover ; then one of the members spotted the Solitary , though hard to see in the water a few feet from shore with all the brush in the way. As the SOSA approached the shore for a better look for us, the BCNH suddenly darted off its limb and chased the SOSA! Not on his turf, mind you; Brooklyn neighborhoods can be tough ! Then we watched the BCNH limbered back to its perch in a hunchback funny way. We have our moments.

Good seeing you today. We had a hearty group of about 20 that braved the misty weather. Lots of bird activity and a good number of species: about 70 total including 18 species of warblers. Probably 4 Blackburnian, lots of Nashville, close Prairie and Blue-winged, several Scarlet Tanagers, two Yellow-throated Vireo, a Worm-eating on my way out of the Vale, which was still active around 1:30 with singing Blackburnian, Parula, Northern Waterthrush and more. Fun day.
