Bob's report and master list:

We had a good day Sunday. Based on the scouting done earlier we covered just about everything we thought would be around an the misses were commoners like Red Tails, Blue Jays and American Widgeon. Of note was the barn owl at Big John’s Pond that had been eluding some of us for years. It was looking out of the box both Saturday and Sunday late into the morning. It’s probably getting crowded in there. Chicks appear to be almost the size of the adult except just a big white ball of fluff with a barn owl face. We also saw the first little blue heron reported in NY State this season. One thing I think we were all pretty impressed by was the Northern Gannet feeding display we witnessed from the Beach 44th Street area of Rockaway Park. Chris Elliot captured the spectacle digitally for us here. We even heard a Ring-necked Pheasant at the same location and got to see it when flushed by a spaniel.

Great to see first prospect Pine Warblers of the season! Monica and I spotted them near terrace bridge after the BBC walk today. Two very bright males, perching on railing and near by low branches as well as walking on ground beneath pine tree. We later saw one of the birds in the woods with two brown creepers near the lullwater viewing platform.

Earlier in the day I said, "the weather today feels exactly the same as the day the first pine was spotted last March, maybe we'll get lucky."

March 4th Prospect Park

We had 2 walks. 8am Neal and I led the walk passed the feeders to lampost 249 in hopes of finding the Common Yellowthroat.


Neal brought his scope which he had won in a silent auction at a Linnean function. The group of 13 were hunkered around it on Wellhouse Drive trying to see the Hooded Mergansers on the other side of the lake. We continured looking for the warbler. While we were at those new picnic tables someone called out brown thrasher! Sure enough, it was right where we left it several months ago, scratching in the leaf liter behind the fence. One of the people on the tour was a gentleman named Tom. His uncle, Bernard Brennan was a member of the Brooklyn Bird Club from the 1950's to early 1990. He would come to Prospect Park with his uncle when he was young and now that he is getting back into birding, he looked up our tour and joined us. We went to the peninsula and got some great looks at the merganser's.

The group made their way back to the center to pick up the 10am birders. Eni and Vinnie led that group of 31 more people. They went back towards the lake and Bobbi was able to coax a kitten that had been hanging around the picnic tables into going with her to a shelter. Sean Casey is an animal rescue organization in Windsor Terrace. They came and took the kitty. Great news for kittens and birds alike. http://www.nyanimalrescue.org

Saturday February 18th , Walkill River National Refuge, near Hamburg, NJ

The trip up to the Shawangunk Grasslands and Blue Chip Farm was a great success yesterday. It was but four of us, Edith, Janet Schumacher, Donna and myself, but we were all treated to great views of our sought after birds, Short-eared Owls, Rough-legged Hawks and Northern Harriers. We searched for the Cackling Goose but could not find it in the large flock of Canadas; a Snow Goose stood out like a white thumb though, evidently long resident with the larger flock.


The Roughies, both light and dark morphs, were perched up nicely when we got to the grassland and the Harriers were working the fields and surrounding areas. Finally around 4:30 the Short-eared Owls began to appear, first just one flying and later up to 5 flying at once. They perched up in easy scoping distance at times giving everyone lifetime views of the birds. A "Gray Ghost" Harrier also put in an appearance and at times there could be maybe twelve or so raptors in the air and perched up in view at the same time.


Evidently the reason why there were no owls at Wallkill NWR this year could be that the torrential rains in the spring and summer flooded all the fields drowning all the voles and mice; no food - no owls.
