Dramatic highlight: Flying Belted Kingfisher taunting /scolding a perched Cooper's Hawk at Closter Dock Pond; the hawk jumped off and chased the Kingfisher six times but did not succeed in catching the slow flying Kingfisher around the large pond.Chalk one up for the Kingfisher for a "National Geographic moment "

Thursday BBC walk Sept 26th

Results of Thursday BBC walk

leading : Rob Bate, Bobbi Manian ( subbing for Tom Stephenson)

Bobbi reporting:

Hi Peter,

Normally I get excited when we have a 5 woodpecker day but today was extra special.  While we didn't get a Hairy we did get a Red -headed woodpecker!!

Shane had alerted us on Tuesdays walk that he thought he had heard and glimpsed one. Today Rob spotted and heard this bird up on Butterfly Meadow and got everyone on it for good looks.

Tom -we'll be wanting a pileated when you get back! :-)

Tuesday Prospect Park Walks Sept 17th

BBC Tuesday Walk

leading : Bobbi Manian

Hi Peter,

we had 12 people on today's walk.  It was a great group with everyone spotting birds, making my first time out as a walk leader very easy!  The morning was cooler than expected (a few people were lamenting lack of gloves) but as the day warmed up the birds came out!  The peninsula and the area around 3 sisters were particularly active.  At times we had to walk away from dozens of warblers just to get on to the next location.  Phil Hore renamed the Thumb to Warbler Thumb!

Altogether, we had 64 species and 18 warblers over a 7 1/2 hour day.  Only fatigue sent us home at last - the warblers were still begging to be looked at down by West Island as the final two birders standing departed the park.

Best,
Bobbi

September 8th Prospect Park

From leader Tom Stephenson,

We had a very good group today of over 20 folks

Bird activity was spotty, but we had 59 species with a few special sightings. The 14 species of warblers included a Mourning near Rick's place along with 2 Wilson's showing well there and one other on the peninsula.
Of the 3 species of flycatchers, Least was well seen.
Of the 4 species of vireo, Philadelphia showed itself very well near MD monument.
No sign of or reports of the Conwar...
Thanks to Dennis's sharp eyes we had a perched Common Nighthawk in the open also near Rick's place.
All in all a very pleasant day.

Best regards,
Tom
