As reports of the Red Phalarope at Jones Beach were still coming in on the morning of our Cupsogue trip, we called an audible and diverted to West End 2 as our first stop. The eight birders on our trip joined the ten or so other birders who were already there. The bird was quite visible when we got to the pond, and we all got good long looks. We also got a brief view of her in flight as she moved to the other pond.
On to Cupsogue for 11:30 low tide. The weather was perfect with a light breeze keeping bug activity down. Tern variety was down from when we did our dry-run two weeks ago. Mostly Commons with a few Leasts and Forsters. We did get nice looks at juveniles, lots of begging and feeding. Shorebirds were up in species, Lots of dowitchers, willets, various peeps and piping plovers always a crowd pleaser, including at least one juvenile. As we were leaving, we poked into the marsh and HJ spotted a Seaside Sparrow for us. Two others popped around during our 15 minute stationary observation.
On the way home, we stopped by Captree hoping to see the white-faced ibis. We picked thru ibises until our eyes were crossed but no luck. A few participants did see a white-rumped sandpiper fly over.
Big thanks to Mike for being registrar and list-keeper. Unsung hero-role in the club.
Good Birding,
Bobbi/Dennis
