April 29th Prospect Big Sit

Leading : Peter Dorosh

Despite the spare pickings of the Big Sit, the

first in many years for a BBC outing--

did offered the likes of BLUE-WINGED

WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER and

BLACK THROATED GREEN WARBLERS the

best results. After the Big Sit, both waterthrush

species put in shows as well a RUSTY BLACKBIRD

either at the Vale of Cashmere pool or back shore

of Lower and Upper Pools.

Hi Peter,

We had a great group today, about 20 or so, that braved the cold and clouds to help uncover some good birds. Warbler species were a bit scarce, but we had some really good birds including Cerulean Warbler, Ovenbird, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, Peregrine (twice..), Great Egret and Laughing Gull. Lots of Yellow-rumps, several Warbling Vireos seem to be in, 3 Hairy Woodpecker territories, and tons of robins making nests...

Here's the list.

Tom

We had a great walk with Rob this morning. Perfect size group, i think 7. some of our good birds - Indigo Bunting, Blue-headed Vireo, and baby Mourning Doves

From Rob Bate

(we also had 2 Palm Warblers)

Highlight of the day was 3 Indigo Buntings in the lower Midwood near the Zoo first spotted by Bobbi. Everyone got good looks.

Otherwise, pretty slow, one N Waterthrush heard singing above the Esdale Bridge but unable to spot, Blue Headed Vireos giving good looks.

Brooklyn Bird Club trip: 4/21/12

Summary report from Sandy Paci

Hi Peter,

It was a hardy BBC group that explored Caumsett State Park and Target Rock NWR on Saturday. After lucking out big time on the weather, we made the most of the gorgeous day, birding the entire loop at Caumsett (approx. 6 miles) then walking down to the beach and back at Target Rock (approx. 1 1/2 miles) netting 57 species of birds and 13 species of butterflies.

All in all -- a very enjoyable day with an easy-going and fun group. I hope to see everyone again soon.

Sandy

Hi Peter,

Another great day in the park. We had over 20 people with some from far-away places including Ireland, Norway, and Manhattan.

Probably the best bird was a Common Loon that flew over. We also had Fish Crow, Common Yellowthroat, Black-and-White Warbler, Warbling and Blue-headed Vireos, Northern Waterthrush, Eastern Kingbird, Chimney Swifts, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and other relatively new arrivals.

Here's the list.

April 15th Coastal Brooklyn

Leading : Tom Preston

For the April 15th Brooklyn Bird Club 'Coastal Brooklyn' trip we visited Owl's Head Park, Gravesend Bay, Floyd Bennett Field and Jamaica Bay. It was a trip with a good variety of birds, including many First Of Year sightings for all of us.

An hour spent at Owl's Head produced some migrants, though not the numbers we were hoping for after the overnight southerly winds

There were an unusually large number of Sapsuckers - we saw 8 - plus a number of Hermit Thrushes, Flickers, Palm Warblers, Juncos and Chipping Sparrows. We also had our first House Wren, found by Monica. Everyone enjoyed a very close male American Kestrel spotted by Alan.

We moved onto Gravesend Bay for a brief stop to look for Purple Sandpipers. We had a couple of close ones, out of about a dozen which flew back and forth, as well as close views of a Red-throated Loon in winter plumage.

At Floyd Bennett Field, sightings included singing Northern Parula and Field Sparrow near the Community Gardens, Northern Harrier, several more Kestrels and 4 Black-crowned Night Herons at the Return-a-Gift Pond, along with a well-hidden drake Green-winged Teal found by Alexandra.

At Jamaica Bay, spring was obviously in full swing. Among the birds there were 2 Little Blue Herons, Snowy Egret, many Forster's Terns and Boat-tailed Grackles, Glossy Ibis, Ospreys on the nest and over the East Pond, breeding plumage Horned Grebes, Pied-billed Grebe, and a good view of Barn Owl. Towhees are in - we had them in all suitable spots we visited.

Leader : Tom Stephenson

Hi Peter,

Happy Easter.

The walk went very well today. We had a large and enthusiastic group of about 35-40 people.
The weather was beautiful and there were a lot of birds around.

We had 3 Winter Wren, a beautiful Rusty Blackbird will still a lot of rusty feather edgings, a very early Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Rufous-sided Towhee, lots of Pine and Palm Warblers, Louisiana Waterthrush, 5 species of woodpeckers, Osprey, American Kestrel, and more. All in all almost 60 species.

I've attached a couple of shots, so some group members can reminisce.

Best regards,
Tom
