December 5th Prospect Park

Leading Eddie Davis

Seven Brooklyn dedicated Brooklyn birders decided to brave the near-freezing temperatures this morning and join me on a Prospect Park walk. We got most of the expected winter birds, plus a few nice surprises. Highlights included a Rusty Blackbird female at the Vale of Cashmere, both Kinglet species, a Purple Finch female at the feeders, and a surprising American Woodcock near the Lullwater arbor.

November 14th Jamaica Bay Refuge

Leader: Rafael Campos

JAMAICA BAY WR

DAY TRIP WITH

BROOKLYN BIRD CLUB

14 NOVEMBER 2010

COMPILED BY:

Rafael G. Campos R.

ticornis@yahoo.com

Brooklyn, NY

With great expectations, because of the nice temperatures for this part of the Fall (+60°F), I met Rusty Harold at Plaza Street West. A short drive to Jamaica Bay WR where we were going to meet the rest of the group: Nancy Goldner, Emily Goldstein, Phil Malek, and Kathy Toomey.

Our first stop, the East Pond. On the way to area called “The Raunt”, we stopped at Big John’s Pond, but beside three photographers, only 1 American Black Duck.

At “the Raunt”, we were surprised to see such big numbers of waterfowl species: Gadwall, Mallard, Blue-winged Teal (only Rusty), Ruddy Duck, Northern Shoveler, Hooded Merganser, Canada Goose, American Wigeon (see list at the end). Other species present in big numbers was the American Coot. A single Snow Goose was seen flying out towards the JFK airport grounds, but minutes later, a whole flock came by landed on the far end of the West Pond. Among this flock, one of the Geese, had this “yellow” neck band, with the black inscription as follows: KH40.

Also some raptors while we were approaching the East Pond, at least 2 Sharp-shinned Hawks, flew East. Later a noisy flock of American Crows, chased away another “Accipiter” hawk. A Northern Harrier flew by, and later on the West Pond we saw several individuals flying over the marshes.

On the way back from East Pond, another stop at Big John’s Pond, gave us the only views of 1 female Wood Duck. Also we saw here, Green-winged Teal.

The West Pond was loaded with “Scaups” (both species), among other species of waterfowl, like: Ruddy Duck, Mallard, Northern Shoveler, Ruddy Duck, Brant, Canada Goose.

Among the “Scaups”, was the big surprise, and perhaps the best bird this day trip, and two: Redhead.

It is a late for shorebirds in general, but we were lucky to see at least 6 indidividuals of Greater Yellowlegs.

The calm waters of the bay next to the West Pond were loaded with Brants, and Buffleheads, plus some Horned Grebes.

By midday, the winds started to increase, and we turned back towards the visitor’s center. The trip was over after our snacks were finished.

The species recorded:

October 30th Southwest Long Island Coast

Photo taken by Steve Nanz, from the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center trail
Leader : Steve Nanz

On the Brooklyn Bird Club trip to Jones beach Matthew Rymkiewicz and I found a Northern Shrike ( see note at bottom species is re-identified) on the east end of the Nature Boardwalk by the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center at Parking Field #1. A little while later, Lynn Hertzog spotted a whale.

We went to Point Lookout after lunch. While parking in the Malibu Beach Parking Lot, we found a large flock of Dunlin and Black-bellied Plovers. There were a few Sanderlings mixed in along with a Red Knot and a Golden Plover.

Coastal Brooklyn October 23rd

Leader: Rob Jett

Subject: Birding Brooklyn's Coast
From: Rob Jett
Date: Sat, 23 Oct 2010 17:33:26 -0400

I led a trip for the Brooklyn Bird Club today
to several coastal areas in Brooklyn. We started
the morning at Dreier-Offerman Park (Calvert
Vaux) and also birded Plum Beach, Dead Horse Bay
and Floyd Bennett Field. A strong NW wind early
in the day kept a lot of birds down, but
we did manage a few nice highlights.

The first bird of the day was an extremely
cooperative Yellow-billed Cuckoo. We had just
parked the cars and were headed down the path
when Michael Yuan spotted the bird perched 3 feet
off the ground and only about 15 feet away. It allowed
ridiculously long, close looks before eventually
flying across the path and into more dense cover.
The main soccer fields were being blasted by cold
winds off the bay, but there was still a few Killdeer
and a Wilson's Snipe hunkered down in the
grass. We didn't see a lot of sparrows, but
yellow-rumps were abundant and, on our way out, a
very brightly plumed Nashville Warbler foraged
a short distance from where we had seen the cuckoo.

The target species at Plum Beach was Nelson's Sparrow,
of which we quickly found two.

Dead Horse Bay was pretty much a bust, with a
brief Osprey sighting being the only highlight.

It was noon by the time we got to Floyd Bennett, so
there wasn't much sparrow activity at the community
garden, just lots and lots of yellow-rumps. We did
spot one male Purple Finch. A single Cattle Egret
remains on the main grasslands making this nearly
two weeks since it was first spotted. We watched it
drinking from a small puddle next to a NPS truck.
At the Return-a-Gift Pond there were several Green-winged
Teal, three Wood Duck and a single Northern Pintail.

There was a lot of raptor activity all day, with
many Sharp-shinned Hawks seen at all locations.
Other raptor species observed were Osprey, Northern
Harrier, Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, American
Kestrel, Merlin and Peregrine Falcon.

Observers: Alejandra Borunda, Eddie Davis,
Donna Evans, Rob Jett, Michael Johnson, Phil Malek,
Janet Schumacher, Bob Washburn, Michael Yuan

Good birding,

Rob

The BBC walk was a big group with lots of keen eyes.
Thanks to all for finding many good birds and to Rafael
who helped out Rob and I.All 3 Wilsonia was nice :)
Birds marked "pm" were mostly without the
group.
Around 3pm birds started bottlenecking/staging
at the Peninsula tip/ South lakeside - spectacular.
50 individual warblers on the Peninsula alone is
probably a conservative estimate as are all numbers
below.

Hi Peter,

We had a very good group today, 15 very patient people! The day started very slowly with very few birds. Even our initial tour of Lookout yielded very few warblers.

However persistence eventually paid off, as well as the skills of the participants, and we ended up with 16 species of warblers

and some other really good birds (like perched Common Nighthawk thanks to keen eye of Janet Schumacher)

I think the sound check for the concert drove the really good birds over to the lullwater....including Pine and Bay-breasted....

Here's the list with a few comments.

Best regards,

Tom
