We arrived at Jones Beach State Park at 7:30 am and left Pt Lookout to go home after 5 pm. Kevin said it was the longest bird trip he'd ever been on, but clearly he has not been on enough of your trips!

The Thick-billed Murre, which we found at Jones Field 6 was a lifer for Kevin, Charles, Bob and Bets.

We hit the Coast Guard Station, the West End and walked out to the jetty, Field 6, the Gatsby playground hoping for the Painted Bunting without success, Nickerson and Pt Lookout.

We have a list of 40 species for the day. (You all, let me know if I missed something) We found one single Red Knot in a crowd of 500 Dunlin and a few dozen Black-bellied Plovers. Harlequins at both the Jones Beach West End jetty and Pt Lookout. We were sad to not find the Lapland Longspur at Nickerson, nor the Painted Bunting at Jones, and no Snowy Owl but we had a lot of other fun birds.

(The Latin names were part of the file I downloaded from eBird and I didn't feel like taking them out...)
Common Loon (Gavia immer)

Croton Point Park January 26th

Bald Eagle

Leader Mike Yuan

Party : Janet S, Eddie D., Linda E.

Four birders spent a beautiful sunny morning at Croton Point Park, along the Hudson River. After a quick ride on Metro North, with some birding out the window, we first visited the mouth of the Croton River from the southern end of the Croton-Harmon station, where we saw the first of many COMMON MERGANSERS on the day. In Croton Point Park, a hike to the north point and the Nature Center gave us views of COMMON GOLDENEYES and more merganser rafts, as well as a PEREGRINE FALCON fly-by. We saw our first BALD EAGLE crossing down to the southern point, where we had good numbers of GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS and bubbly CAROLINA WRENS.

The park is currently restoring the landfill grasslands, so it was fairly barren, but we had our one and only adult
BALD EAGLE on the way down.

We capped off the morning with a pint and lunch at the Green Growler, a taproom situated conveniently next to the train station.

Thanks to all for a great day, and to Janet S for handling the registrations and the rescheduled trip.

Thanks,
Mike

It was a beautiful day to be on the beach! We ended up with 6 participants (including me). We covered the beach (from just east of Stillwell looking toward Brighton Beach, all the way down to Seagate), scoped the Ocean from the Pier, and then (since we had some time) cut over to Coney Island Creek and Louis Kaiser Park. Highlights were Black and Surf Scoters, great looks at Long-tailed Ducks, and a close Northern Gannet (we saw more than one, but the others were distant).

Rusty kept an eBird list with approximate counts and will share it, but in the meantime, here are the species:

Canada Goose
Brant
Mallard
Am Black Duck
Gadwall
Greater Scaup
Surf Scoter (many!)
Black Scoter
Long-tailed Duck (many)
Red-breasted Merganser
Hooded Merganser
Bufflehead
Ruddy Duck
Rock Pigeon
Purple Sandpiper
Herring Gull
Ring-billed Gull
Great Black-backed Gull
Common Loon (close looks)
Red-throated Loon
Northern Gannet
American Kestrel
American Crow
European Starling
House Sparrow

Great birds (the Long-tailed Ducks and the gannet were group favorites) and great pizza afterwards at Totonno's.

I really appreciated the chance to lead a walk - thank you!

Linda

Peter,

I've attached a PDF file of the list. The 2 "goose sp." were the local snants hanging out with pigeons on the parking lot of Canarsie Pier.

The raging west winds made much of the birding a challenge. Land birds were scarce, but we had a few highlights before abandoning the Canarsie area for a run to Sheepshead Bay for the Harlequin Duck. That included an adult Red-shouldered Hawk and two Common Mergansers. Everyone was really excited to see the very cooperative young male Harlequin, which was a lifer for many in the BBC group. It was a county bird for me.

I was planning to send Mike a short write up to put on FB later. Also, after Susan Axelrod dropped off myself, Grace Markman and Reece Hunt on 5th Street, I walked the ladies up to the Nethermead Arches to see their first Varied Thrush.

Best,

Rob

Hey Peter,

Here are our checklists from the "New Horizons" trip. We had 10 participants in total on a windy, sunny, frigid day. Each stop brought several surprises.

We made four stops: Marine Park southwest, Shirley Chisholm SP, Jamaica Bay East Pond, and Sunset Cove Park. We were all impressed by the new trail system at Marine Park, with its mix of marsh, creek, meadow, and maritime forest. Shirley Chisholm offers prime habitat on the way to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. And Sunset Cove is still a work-in-progress -- they just planted a dozen acres of beachgrass -- but it has great views of NYC and should be a beautiful spot one day once it grows in.

The highlights included a late pair of Indigo Buntings at the new Marine Park trails, as well as two Black-bellied Plovers, a Northern Harrier over White Island, and close-up views of a Cooper's Hawk; six sparrows species at Shirley Chisholm, among them Vesper, American Tree, and Savannah; and a quartet of Redheads at the East Pond.

November 9th Brooklyn Coast Potpourri

Brown Pelican chased by a Greater Black backed Gull over Coney Island Creek, photo'd by Charles Tang

Leader Heydi Lopes

Writeup from Heydi:

It was a sunny but chilly morning as the group met at Coney Island Creek Park, our first stop.  And we had a great start to the trip with a Brown Pelican! that glided over:  we barely had time to set up scopes!  After the excitement of the Pelican,  we made our way down the beach and saw quite a bit of waterfowl making their return, and on the way back to the cars, we heard, then saw, a bright, late Pine Warbler in one of the pines.

Next stop was the jetty at Coney Island, where the highlight was a White-winged Scoter, and Northern Gannets too, which are always fun to see.  After this, we headed to Dead Horse Bay, where we saw FOS Horned Grebes, and a female Blue-winged teal (so tiny!) hanging mixed in with the Brant.  Next and last it was off to Floyd Bennett Field, where we saw quite a few raptors, including Merlin, Northern Harrier, American Kestrel, and Sharp-shinned Hawk.

All in all, not a bad day, and a nice day to be out birding!

Hi, Peter

It was a sunny, cool day in the park today. Many birds, including flocks migrating overhead. Eight participants, we saw over 40 species of birds, including three Buffleheads on the lake, lingering Blue-headed Vireos and Northern Waterthrush (at Three Sisters). Next to the container on Wellhouse Drive, we saw very briefly what I think was probably a Nashville Warbler. See checklist attached for details.

Best regards, Ed
