Hi Peter,

Well.......it was pretty slow....We thought the bird of the day was going to be a hummingbird moth....but all in all it was very beautiful and we did have some quality time with very close sanderlings and royal terns out on the beach. We went to  Floyd Bennett and spent some time there as well but it also was dead...

Here's the list. I'll send a note to the group as well.

Best regards,
Tom

Hi Peter,

It felt like a slow day and we worked for all we got, but we ended up netting 67 species collectively including 16 warbler species.  But the highlight of the day were 2 Philadelphia Vireo's spotted on the Penna by Kathy!  Karen got some good pics and will forward to you separately.   No dog party on penna today either, so i count it as a big success.

Best,
Bobbi

Hi Peter,

Governor's Island revealed some good birds for its debut as a Club trip destination. Although the overall species count of 28 was low, the quality of the birds seen was excellent.
We started off with a Merlin right as we disembarked from the ferry, quickly followed by Red-tailed hawk and Kestrel, brining our raptor count up to three. We got close-up looks at four kestrels as they hovered over the ballfield. The most productive area by far was Nolan Park, in particular the patch behind the old synagogue. In the shrubs at this location, we managed to pull off a "mimid hat trick": Catbird, Mockingbird, and Brown Thrasher all within minutes of each other.
Governor's Island will remain open to the public for 2 more weekends; it should definitely be added to the list for any birders looking for a unique location to spot some fall migrants. A big thanks to Ryan and Giselle for coming along on this walk!
Full species list below.
Best,

-Sean

Hey Peter,

Great walk today with 65ish species. The group toughed it out with hot humid weather difficult fall warblers and quiet empids. Lots of fun working out identifications and getting each other on active birds in very leafed out woods.

Looking forward to some cooler weather next week.

Best,

D

Hi Peter,

We had a good walk today. Although it was a bit hot there was a breeze and quite a few birds including lots of flycatchers (I wonder why so many this year...)

All in all we had 15 species of warblers including an early Orange-crowned (in vale), Prairie (Peninsula), Wilson's and a late Louisiana Waterthrush along the Binnen Stream.

As for flycatchers we had a Traill's type (not calling at all), 2 and maybe 3 Yellow-bellied Flycatchers and a brief but very clear view of an Acadian. We also ran into the Olive-sided that has been seen in the Breeze Hill area. We saw it from the pink beach and then later from the Lullwater.

Best regards,
Tom

Hi Peter,

Oveall quieter day than the weekend was.  One very active pocket by the picnic tables had tennessee, parula, chestnut-side as well as the regular suspect warblers, also good looks for a few people at a yellow-bellied flycatcher.  We saw a second one on top of Lookout that others got a look at, but never the whole group.   Overall, Lookout and the Lullwater and Ravine were all quiet.

The Peninsula was pretty good but sadly the entire fenced off area, just past the meadow, has been converted into an enclosed DOG RUN!!!  2 men had 8-10 dogs off leash, running around, using the area as a pen.  We called 311 (but got misdirected to Property Insurance)and took photos.  Alan tried to flag down a cop but they didn't see us.  We told them it was protected area and they said 'yeah, we know'.  It really put a damper on the rest of the morning.

Here's hoping for better birding days ahead,
Bobbi

Hey all,

Fun walk today with 13 birders and nice cool weather. Everyone contributed to the list and showed lots of great team work getting each other on birds. Lots of good discussion about chip notes and flight calls. Species count was pretty good at 61 but overall numbers a little on the on the low side. Looking forward to next week's walk. As always thanks to everyone for coming and as always thanks for trusting me with the keys.

Best,

Dennis

Greetings, Peter

The light and sometimes heavier rain may have dampened the avian activity in the Park today.  We persisted to just after noon by which time the precip was mainly done. Below is the link to eBird report.

Regards, Ed
