Peter,

Fourteen birders met at the Pergola on a humid morning that saw an uptick in activity but the floodgates were not opened as wide as hoped. Hightlights were Solitary Sandpiper near west island, several veery, swainson’s thrush Scarlet Tanager plus 15 warbler species including Blackburnian and Willy’s. I may have missed a few. I think everyone had a fun time. I know I had one of the most fun days birding in a while.

Hi Peter and Rob,

Kathy and I had a group of 13 today.  Overall things continue to be quiet.  The winds have continued from the south and nothing new seems to have come in.  We had 9 warbler species, including lots of redstarts and a female type wilson's warbler was probably our best bird.  Possible Bobolink at Butterfly meadow but we didn't get good enough looks.  Most activity seemed to be by the water.  We covered Quaker Cemetery area, Lookout, Peninsula, Wellhouse, and southwest side of lake around to 3 sisters.

Here's hoping the winds change soon.

13 birders celebrated World Shorebird Day at a couple of prime shorebirding spots in Brooklyn and Queens.  

We started the day at Dreier-Offerman Park, which yielded the only GREATER YELLOWLEGS of the day.  Next, we continued on to Plumb Beach for the rising tide, which sometimes brings rarities on the shrinking tidal flats. The shorebirds didn't materialize this time, but the group saw SEASIDE SPARROW and LITTLE BLUE HERON on the marsh.  

Finally, we trekked up the East Pond from south end at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.  On our first glimpse of the pond, we spotted a PECTORAL SANDPIPER, and soon after picked out WESTERN SANDPIPERS and 4 stunning juvenile SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS.  Fighting the sun, heat, and seasonal allergies, we made it to a point on the North end where we could see STILT SANDPIPERS and their tell-tale feeding habits.  With the stilts, we observed a peculiar medium-sized shorebird whose ID is still TBD.  Hoping some photo and video analysis gets us an answer!

Thanks to the drivers, Bobbi, Bob, Chris, and Marc, and big up to Dennis for wrangling up the herd!

Peter,

Walked to the pergola meeting place from our new home today for the first time. Looking forward to taking this walk for many years to come.

Seven Birders met on a perfect morning. Most active spot was duck island that saw Praire, Parula, yellow, common yellow throat, black and white northern waterthrush. Other highlights were nice looks at humming birds, a soaring peregrine on lookout, common loon flyover and continuing blue wing teal you found on last weeks walk at upper pool. We also had a shorebird flyover at lamp post 249 but it was to fast for us. Appeared to be calidrid, bigger than a peep, breast streaking ending abruptly at white belly, fluid wing beats couldn't see bill.

Well...it was very quiet today; a huge contrast from last week. I guess a northerly wind "hoovered" out all of the birds that had been in the park.

Our bird of the day was a very active Raccoon....although we did have at least 8 Northern Waterthrush, a brief Tennessee, lots of Redstarts and Black-and-whites; quite a few Northern Flicker, and a fly-over American Kestrel. Only 7 species of warblers this week, compared to 14 last...but more are sure to come...

Typical of the third day I find to be slow days after the northwest wind,today was not so bad after Thursday's northwest wind.Yes, the warbler numbers were low today yet we did find a quality species , but other species not a warbler had their day in the sun for my Brooklyn Bird Club walk.

Only 42 species -10 warbler species-were tallied but the group I led was treated to hilights ofWORMEATING WARBLER ( found gleaning from dead leaves), YELLOW BELLIED FLYCATCHER and a BLUEWINGED TEAL,rare for Prospect. The first two species were sighted on the Peninsula Lullwater trail close to the pink concrete beach.The Teal duck lingered on Upper Pool withWOOD DUCKS.

Missed though as I received word was Mike Yuan's reported PHILADELPHIA VIREO on Lookout Hills south slope switchback trail by the Maryland Monument,seen in the upper section of the trail.His photo is in his Ebird report,in my previous post below.
