Hi Peter,

14 birders had a good day at Plum today.  Shorebirds were not as prevalent as i had hoped, no RedKnots, Dunlin or Piping Plovers. But we birded the mudflats and marsh methodically, the birds here are often ephemeral, they appear and then they are gone.  We had the standard shorebirds, resident banded AMOY C6 has returned for his/her 11th year, and we had good looks at Sanderlings in various plumages, and we also had flyby SB Dowitchers and Glossy Ibises.  Late black scoters, found by Shane Blodgett, were a very nice surprise.  i wonder if the pair that summered here last year will return?

Of course the star of the day was the Franklins Gull found yesterday by Deb Allen, that everyone was searching for.  There were other birders on the beach today besides us. Earlier in the morning Shane briefly had the bird flying by the mouth of Gerritsen Creek, but the bird went up and over the highway before anyone else could get on it.  

Just around noon,  Shane yelled over to us something i didn't understand, but he and his group were hustling west on the beach and we quickly followed.  It turned out Sean Sime had just refound the bird all the way down at the west end by Kingsboro College.  It took our combined groups a few minutes to find the bird, being at a different vantage point than Sean was.  We settled in and Shane and Andrew Baksh made sure that everyone got good (if distant) looks before we all proceeded forward to try and get better looks, big THANK YOU to them!  Unfortunately, as we were walking west, and Sean and Rob were walking east, the bird flew and was not relocated.

Because it was otherwise quiet at Plum, we wrapped up with a quick hour walk at Marine Park.  There was at least one baby osprey in the nest and the oystercatchers and willets appear to be breeding.  (Marine Park list to follow in separate email)

20 birders met at the pergola on an unseasonably cool morning for a flycatcher and thrush search and workshop to close out the spring migration series of walks. Highlights were Alder Flycatcher, 16 Warblers, Grey Cheeked and Bicknell's Thrush. The Cooperative Bicknell's sang several times and gave great views for all. 67 species total. Hi Peter,

Well, it was pretty birdy out there today!  An incredible amount of activity on a very beautiful and pleasant day. We ended up with 86 species including 25 species of warblers. Considering we had almost no raptors, herons, ducks and many other groups, the list was very good.\

The group started out at about 36 or so and many hung in for most of the day.

Highlights include: Ruby-throated Hummingbird building at nest near the lullwater cove; 2 eggs on the Green Heron nest; Solitary and Spotted Sandpipers, Indigo Bunting, 5 species of vireo including White-eyed and Yellow-throated (thanks to Rob J); 3 Worm-eating Warblers, very good looks at Bay-breasted, Canada, Cape May, Blue-winged (at least 2), Magnolia, Chestnut-sided and more including over 1 million Northern Parulas, all singing simultaneously.

 

A few species were more elusive. The Kentucky was just chipping; and the Blackburnian and  Tennessee didn't put in much of an appearance. But all in all lots of great sightings.

Peter,

28 birders met at the pergola on a perfect spring day that saw many birds leave but few new arrivals. 

Highlights were FOS Magnolia along lull water. Nice looks of eastern kingbird on butterfly meadow. Cooperative bank swallow and parula on Penna. we also were able to observe some nest building by green heron and barn swallow.
