Hey Peter,

Here are our checklists from the "New Horizons" trip. We had 10 participants in total on a windy, sunny, frigid day. Each stop brought several surprises.

We made four stops: Marine Park southwest, Shirley Chisholm SP, Jamaica Bay East Pond, and Sunset Cove Park. We were all impressed by the new trail system at Marine Park, with its mix of marsh, creek, meadow, and maritime forest. Shirley Chisholm offers prime habitat on the way to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. And Sunset Cove is still a work-in-progress -- they just planted a dozen acres of beachgrass -- but it has great views of NYC and should be a beautiful spot one day once it grows in.

The highlights included a late pair of Indigo Buntings at the new Marine Park trails, as well as two Black-bellied Plovers, a Northern Harrier over White Island, and close-up views of a Cooper's Hawk; six sparrows species at Shirley Chisholm, among them Vesper, American Tree, and Savannah; and a quartet of Redheads at the East Pond.

November 9th Brooklyn Coast Potpourri

It was a sunny but chilly morning as the group met at Coney Island Creek Park, our first stop.  And we had a great start to the trip with a Brown Pelican! that glided over:  we barely had time to set up scopes!  After the excitement of the Pelican,  we made our way down the beach and saw quite a bit of waterfowl making their return, and on the way back to the cars, we heard, then saw, a bright, late Pine Warbler in one of the pines.

Next stop was the jetty at Coney Island, where the highlight was a White-winged Scoter, and Northern Gannets too, which are always fun to see.  After this, we headed to Dead Horse Bay, where we saw FOS Horned Grebes, and a female Blue-winged teal (so tiny!) hanging mixed in with the Brant.  Next and last it was off to Floyd Bennett Field, where we saw quite a few raptors, including Merlin, Northern Harrier, American Kestrel, and Sharp-shinned Hawk.

All in all, not a bad day, and a nice day to be out birding!

Hi, Peter

It was a sunny, cool day in the park today. Many birds, including flocks migrating overhead. Eight participants, we saw over 40 species of birds, including three Buffleheads on the lake, lingering Blue-headed Vireos and Northern Waterthrush (at Three Sisters). Next to the container on Wellhouse Drive, we saw very briefly what I think was probably a Nashville Warbler. See checklist attached for details.

I'd like to say we were blown away by the birds in the park today....but.....we were just blown away....I also saw several small dogs flying through the air, which was a highlight.

That being said, it was a very nice, brisk, fall day, with a few good birds including several Golden-crowned Kinglets, lots of Yellow-rumps, a wigeon, a few Ruddy Duck and more. We ended up with 7 warbler sp, as well as a few sparrow sp including Field and quite a few Chipping Sparrows.

We had a fun day yesterday. There was only one car so only four people went: myself, Mike Yuan, and Bob and HJ Washburn. We went to Kissena Park and then the north and south ends of Jamaica Bay's east pond, and had a total of 79 species. Ebird checklist below. Highlights: Brown Thrasher and Gray-checked Thrush at Kissena; 3 American Avocet, Stilt Sandpiper, and Pectoral Sandpiper at the north end of east pond; 4 Long-billed Dowitcher (next to several Short-billed for excellent comparisons) at the south end.

Such a beautiful day today. Great Fall weather.
The birds were a bit clumpy, though. But eventually we had some good sightings.
I've never seen so many Palm Warblers, easily 100+ in the park. Also 30 or so Wood Duck in the pools area. Other highlights: Orange-crowned and Tennesse by the containers near the Well House;  15 species of warblers in all; a crazy purple-laced Mourning Cloak butterfly; 2 Prairie Warblers, a White-crowned Sparrow on the LeFrak, lots of Yellow-rumps and some White-throated Sparrows....

Here's the list. I'll send some photos later today or tomorrow, including that butterfly.

today was the final Tuesday walk.  We had a very good day, it was active (with warblers) all around the lake.  But where are the sparrows???  We saw the green-winged teal and a very cute CARW with no tail, which gave us a start for a moment.

Best day of birding this fall with 65 species and 16 warblers. The highlight was a lark Sparrow found on the hammer head by John Dean. One more to go this season hoping more Sparrows make an appearance next week.

Wet....very wet....but actually also really birdy, especially at the southern end of the park. There seemed to be a very large flock of warblers, including maybe 20 Northern Parulas, that were slowly going South starting around the West Island area. Once they hit the lawn near the rink they turned around and streamed somewhere north, maybe to start the route again.

It was really a very nice Fall day, with lots of wild flowers, albeit a little cold. (one or two of our group may have suffered hypothermia...??!)

We had 17 species of warblers including Tennessee, Wilson's, Blackburnian, a Nashville on the LeFrak roof, 1 Pine, lots of Parulas, and the beginning of the Yellow-rumped invasion...Also a female Wigeon near the peninsula west of west island.
