Hi Peter,

A great migration today, with finally lots of numbers as well as 81 species including 15 species of warblers.

Highlights were first, an early, singing, Cerulean Warbler in the lullwater around the feeder area. We heard it several times as it moved around in that area.
Yellow-throated Vireos (3 I believe), probably 5 Purple Finch including 2 males, 2 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, Great-crested Flycatcher and Eastern Kinbirds are back, Bank Swallow on the lake, thanks to tip from Keir to look for it; a late Red-breasted Nuthatch, lots of Yellow Warblers, American Redstart, Black-throated Green, at least 4 Prairie Warblers, Scarlet Tanager, and lots more.

I'll send a couple of pictures later, but wanted to get the word out on the Cerulean now.

Best regards,
Tom

Tuesday BBC April 28th

Leading : Bobbi  Manian

Hi Peter and Rob

We had 13 people on the walk yesterday including a couple visiting from Sweden.  It was overall more quiet than last week, i guess the winds have not been favorable.  But we did tally 60 species including 8 warblers.   It looks like the winds won't turn until the weekend :-(

Peter,

19 birders met at the pergola on a very cold morning. Duck island continues to produce good birds with Prothonotary, hooded warbler and rusty black bird. Other highlights were northern waterthrush, red eye vireo, ovenbird, singing yellow warbler and prairie warbler heard and seen near lakeside after walk had broken up.

Thanks to all for another great day of birding,

Dennis

Hi Peter,

Although it felt like February, we ended up having a very good walk today.
We had about 28 people braving the cold and what at first seemed like a very slow birding day.
However we ended up with 61 species and some good ones.
Highlights included
Raptors: Merlin, Peregrine, Red-shouldered Hawk (beautiful fly-by), Red-tailed, Sharp-shinned)
Warblers: highlights were Prairie Warbler (on peninsula), Hooded Warbler (thanks to Mike Yuan for persisting in the search past the first playgrounds), Ovenbird, Louisiana Waterthrush, Black-and-white (at least 3), many Pine Warblers (both very drab, inbetween and very bright), many Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, 5 Common Loon (4 fly-over, one on the lake),
a cooperative Green Heron, Purple Finch and others.

A few shots attached for the FB and blog site.

Best regards,
Tom

Hi Peter and Rob

we had 16 people today.  highlights included 9 hooded mergansers in the upper pool, and a trio of spectacular warblers.  We had about given up on the yellow-throated warbler when we ran into (I believe it was) Cesar Castillo  who told us he had just seen it on the east side of terrace bridge, on the path heading toward music island.  we were on the west side and quickly went up and over.  initially no luck on YT but we found the prothonotary, with some help from Ed Crowne, and then while the group was looking at PROW, the YT flew into view and they were both eating bugs on the green facade of the bridge in the same bin view.  Quite a site!  Then we headed to Lincoln to look for the Hooded and when we were at the Oriental structure, we got a heads up phone call from Karen O that she and Ed were looking at it, so we hustled over and after a few minutes, relocated it.  After all this excitement the rest of the day was gravy.  We found a second, duller, PROW by the tarped over frags by 3-sisters.  Eni found a brown thrasher and blue-headed vireo.  We found a FOS black-throated Green behind the upper pools.   there were yellow-rumps and palms everywhere.   All in all, 65 species, 11 warblers.

best,
Bobbi

Hi Peter,

It was a beautiful day for a walk!  16 enthusiastic birders met at Floyd Bennett Field, the first stop on our trip.  It was nice to hear the Savannah Sparrows singing. We then got good looks at two Ring-necked Pheasants as they stepped out of the edge of the North 40 and onto the runway.

On our next stop, the Salt Marsh Nature Center at Marine Park, we saw many of the same birds we had seen at Floyd. There were still some Ruddy Ducks hanging around, Greater Yellowlegs, Forster's Terns and a very close, low-flying Turkey Vulture.  The last bird of our trip, the long-lingering male Northern Pintail, was a highlight.

It was a great group and a great day to be out!

Hi Peter,

Well, today the weather was much improved from last week, but there were fewer species in the park...so migration is still in the wings, as it were....

We had 53 species (still not bad for April) as listed below. Highlights included and American Lady butterfly...(we actually weren't that desperate, but a beautiful insect it was), Northern Parula, lots of Pines and Palms, many very fired-up Ruby-crowned Kinglets (all the golden seem to have left already), Turkey Vulture, American Widgeon pair, Monk Parakeets fly by, Common Yellowthroat and more.

Here's the list with a couple of photos.
One's a Palm Warbler showing its diagnostic tail pattern.
