Informal Tuesday BBC walk Oct 15th

Leader Bobbi Manian

This is the last group fall walk.

Hi Peter and Rob,

The Tuesday walk regulars met one more time today, sans Rob.

Early morning fog on the ballfields eventually burned off and we had a beautiful day netting 56 species (Kathy adding  coot, redstart, r/e vireo, red-tailed hawk and *Hooded* via post walk text update).   A huge MURDER of crows flew over us on Lookout, nothing 'attempted' with this lot.  Sora still present.  A late (per eBird) Scarlet Tanager gave us some nice looks on Butterfly.    Janet got us some nice documentation shots to appease the eBird checkbox ;-)

The sparrow-bowl was pretty dead, but Breeze Hill had Chipping, Juncos and White-throats.

As the group was breaking up, Kathy decided to give Lookout one more chance, we hadn't seen the Hooded in the morning.  After finding the before mentioned coot, redstart and r/e vireo, she texted me she was calling it quits (so i knew it was ok to send you the final list).  Luckily i was out running errands because 10 minutes later she texted me one last time.  Patience won the day and she saw the male hooded in the same area Gus previously reported.

List below.

October 13th,Marine Park by train

BBC group, photo by Bobbi Manian
Leader: Dennis Hrehowsik

Twelve Birders enjoyed perfect weather at Marine Park where highlights included Vesper Sparrow, initially spotted by Bobbi then later re-found by group who enjoyed extended scope views of the cooperative pooecetes. Brief but clear views of Nelson's Sparrow were enjoyed by all. A falcon hat trick and two brief clapper rail sightings both spotted by Klemens rounded out the day.

Thanks to all,
Dennis

October 5th "Leaders Choice" Prospect Park

Leader : Sandy Paci

Note from Bobbi Manian

Hi Peter,

we had an awesome time on Sandy's walk today.  Klemens and Kathy, our two expert rail finders attended and Chellie is back visiting for a week from TN and joined as well.

It's likely Sandy or Chellie got better pictures of the Vesper than i did, but here's my best shot.

Sandy sending list under separate cover.

BBC Walk list ( compiled by Sandy Paci)

We had a very successful walk today in Prospect Park with a group of about ten birders besides myself. We started the day with the contributing Sora at the lake near the Wellhouse shortly after 7am and ended with a first of season Vesper Sparrow at around 2:30pm in the Long Meadow. The birding was a little slow at times but through patience and persistence, and thanks to some skilled eyes and ears, we eventually netted  68 species including 12 warblers. Hope everyone had as much fun as I did!

Special thanks also to our sacrificial birders who left early and did not get the Vesper Sparrow. Those of us who remained appreciate it!

Hope to see everyone again soon,

Sandy Paci
